HOLIDAY HOMEWORK / RESEARCH 1 - Analyse two film openings (Bonnie And Clyde 1967)

BONNIE AND CLYDE (1967)

This title sequence starts off with an ident which is Warner Bros. Pictures. The type of structure of the sequence appears to be 'titles over a blank screen'. There isn't any diverse camera angles, the format of the opening is merely still photography/montage and appears to be quite dull and a folktale.

The images seem to be 'old' and are in a sepia effect which reflects the time period the film was made in. The images appear in singles, like a slideshow, and are of baby pictures and family and there is also a snapshot sound when they appear on screen. This type of opening may influence the audience to be intrigued as it is a much more calmer yet slightly unsettling opening.

The editing of this title sequence is very simplistic and plain. It doesn't consist of much editing techniques or styles apart from the basics which is white, bold text and images upon black background. Each image is shown quite quickly.

Except from the snapshot sounds, there aren't any other sounds during this title sequence, however 'vintage' or 'folk' music begins playing towards the middle of the title sequence. This choice of soundtrack fits the theme of the title sequence completely as it emphasizes the fact this is an older film so the music back then will be different to what it is now and to what younger generations are used to.

Rather than introducing the characters' name through super imposed or intercut text, this title sequence includes a picture of the two main characters (Bonnie and Clyde) and a slight background check/information about them. This is effective as it resembles a biography format and similarly to olden stories - where the character is always introduced first before the actual plot - helps the audience understand a little bit more about who these people are, what they're about and etc.
