Practice - Preparing for Prelim

Prelim

Part of the coursework unit mainly involves a lot of practical work. In order to make our video the best way possible, we decided to record a trial video before the real one in order to gain experience and apply it into the actually piece of work. This will produce a better outcome and it will teach us the skills twice, which could be useful for the future. We were given a task that also required us to include at least one match cut, an example of shot/reverse shot and showing my understanding of the 180 degree rule.
We had to follow this sequence: "A character opens a door, walks into a room, sits down opposite another character and they share a few lines with dialogue."

Preparation

In order to prepare for the shots we were going to take for the story board we had to make sure we had some props to use in order to make the story more realistic. Me and my colleagues bought a water bottle, which we used for the match cut. After getting all the necessary props, we had to find a location that would work for the brief that we were given. We thought the main hall would be a good idea because the door is useful and perfect and also the tables and the scenery looks like a place where people go to have a chat, so it fits with the sequence. In order to take some shots of how the story is going to go, we had to borrow a camera and a memory card. On the other hand, on this day there were only two of us from the group so we had to get some help from some students that were in the canteen in order to proceed with the work.

Planning

To plan how we were going to film, we wrote down which kind of equipment we were going to need and also we had to organise the way in which the story will go. Furthermore, we made sure we wrote down that we had to use a shot/reverse shot, close up and also respect the 180 degree rule. We had to create a script to make it look more realistic.

Storyboard

To create the storyboard, we used a program called 'quark' which allowed us to put the pictures we took in an specific order so it would make sense to us while we were recording the video. Underneath you can see some of the screenshots we took of the storyboard and also we created a gif that shows how the story will go. We had to make two because it didnt alow us to upload as many pictures.
