RESEARCH - Thriller Openings
In today's Media lesson we looked at many different thriller openings and analysed them. We discussed things like what they include, how they affect the audience and other things.
The main things we came up with were things like non-digetic music, which adds tension. Fast cuts, sometimes no cuts (calm before the storm effect). Some have action, some are simply confusing, making the audience want to know what's happening. They all have something unusual/unexpected, some show blood/gore, dark areas/scenes.
All openings start with titles, they start from most important titles to lower important ones. Most of them are synced to background music, so if the music is fast paced the titles just quickly come up and go, the writing might be flashy and have some effects, if the music is slow paced the titles might just be still, and written in some basic font.
My favourite openings were in;
- Dead Clam
- Deja Vu
- Killers
- Seven
- The Box
- What Lies Beneath
- Collateral
- Enemy of the State
'The Box' opening
This is my favourite one out of the ones we analysed today, I really liked it because it just showed a normal family living their life at the beginning, and then something unusual and unexpected happened, someone has left a mysterious box in front of their door, when they opened it up they found a button and a little note, saying who left it. That was the opening, I have seen the movie long time ago, and the man who left that box came to their house and explained what the button does, whenever you press it someone dies, but there is more to it... you will have to watch it to see, that's why the opening is successful, it makes you want to watch it and see what happens next.
