Research - Thriller Openings
All the openings contained a title sequence which is very important in creating a thriller opening, this should be the first thing the audience see and should create a feel of a thriller movie right away. The use of the music would set the mood for the rest of the movie, and effective in making the opening seem much more sinister. Fast paced music would also usually link with fast paced action openings whilst slower paced would calm the mood of the scene down much more, and can be used to build suspense.
We've watched thriller openings such as The Taking of Pelham 123, where camera is used to pose a thriller feel to the movie. In Pelham 123, the camera focuses on certain characters and elements to make them stand out. The focus can create a sense of suspense as it can leave the audience wondering what the significance of the character/object is. This can be useful in our own Thriller opening. Below I have uploaded The Taking of Pelham 123 as i believe it is a very effective thriller opening. It keeps the reader at the edge of their seat, with fast paced cuts and movements. The use of the music also makes this a very successful opening. The slow paced music swiftly switches to a much faster type with change in scenes. This makes the change very sudden and makes the film seem faster than it actually is. Furthermore the Camera is very good at focusing on key elements which make the thriller much more exciting. Focusing on key characters can introduce them to the audience and make them seem important. It makes the audience pay more attention to these characters.
Other thriller openings i enjoyed were:
- State of Play
- Seven
- Collateral
- What Lies Beneath
- Momento
Amazing!!!
