RESEARCH - Genre and sub-genre

Genre:

A genre is a type of film. Some examples are:
  • Comedy
  • Rom-Com
  • Thriller
  • Horror
  • Action
  • Sci-fi
  • Etc.
Producers - genre allows producers to use a set of generic codes to make the film, e.g. props, locations, actors etc. These can be re-used from film to film and tells the producers where to invest.

Marketing - genre helps to target the audience precisely. Production companies are able to construct their adverts effectively and successfully based off of what sort of generic codes they should use.

Audience - genre gives them a clear sense of expectation.

Sub-genre:

A sub-genre is a subcategory within a particular genre. For example, within a Thriller:
  • Psychological
  • Supernatural
  • Conspiracy
  • Espionage
  • Comedy/spoof
  • Horror
  • Etc.
