Research - Opening Analysis (Dead Calm)

Dead Calm

The first 1 minute and 50 seconds of the opening are just titles. Titles are very important, all openings start with titles, they usually start from most important titles and go to the lower importance ones.
The opening of Dead Calm introduces the audience to the story in an intriguing way, a person gets of the train, looks for a person who was supposed to wait for him, but couldn't find them, and then the police came, saw the man and starting walking towards him, as if they were going to tell him sad news. But we don't get to actually hear what the police men had to say, this is also a usual thing for a thriller opening, they make you want to watch the movie after you see the opening, because you want to know what happens next.
A big variety of camera shots and angles were used in the opening. The first shot of the main character was a mid-shot, it was probably used to show the audience what he was wearing, to show what he does, and where he came from. Wide shots were used to show the surrounding, to show that others were waiting for the returning men. Then they used a close up on the main character to show his emotions, to show his confusion and disappointment.
Music was only used during the title sequence, they played a low, calm, sad feeling music, which stopped after the title sequence. This related to the title Dead Calm.
