Research - FILM CONVENTIONS

Film conventions - Research

The clip I have analysed is The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo opening clip. The clip begins with the usual styles showing the names of actors/producers/directors. There is a backing track which can usually hint at the theme of the movie. In this case, the music is very lively and and loud so we expect this film to have a lot of action and possibly a thriller. The first few shots are also giving away some, but very little hints as to what's to come. The opening clip shows what looks to be a very significant character within the movie. The opening scene has also set the scene for the movie. As a member of the audience, the action in the first scene has got me on the edge of my seat wondering what will happen next. This is effective in grabbing my attention. The camera shots are also very fast paced and closed up, this makes us focus on certain objects but not for too long, allowing us to make our own interpretations. The use of imagery also draws the audience in as each audience can see each part in their own perspective and draw predictions on what could happen. Not too much is given away but enough to leave the audience wondering. The fast paced action also works to make the audiences mind work faster taking in all that is happening and the sudden stop at the end makes the audiences mind want to carry on at that fast pace and can leave them amazed and wanting more.

The title sequence is also very well produced. The action taking place in the background is building up with the music, this helps us to focus on what is going on. The names of the people who played a part in the production of this movie also blend in with the background which further adds to the eerie and dark atmosphere created. Because everything is also slowly getting faster and louder we also get drawn to this opening sequence as it is a natural urge to see what is actually taking place and this is something the director has exploited very well.
