RESEARCH - Intertextuality

Intertextuality is the term used to describe similarities found between one film and another. This means that some films will have certain scenes which the audience will find familiar as they have witnessed it before in another film. Directors and producers will have borrowed these similar aspects usually from an older film and this includes using certain camera angles, editing techniques, soundtracks and mise-en-scene.

An example of intertextuality can be found in the famous bathroom scene in both 'Psycho' and 'Fatal Attraction' which have similar features. One of the main features is the fact that both locations are placed in a bathroom and another being the use of prop/mise-en-scene which is a knife that is the murder weapon. Also, both women end the scene positioned in the bath tub.

The sound in both films are similar too as dramatic music is used which helps to pump up the tension as well as creating suspense also.

The videos below will help demonstrate intertexuality.
