Research - What is a Foley Sound?

What is a Foley Sound?

During the lesson when we were taught how to add sounds to a recorded clip, we were introduced to 'Foley' sounds. These are sounds that are pre-recorded before being added to the clip. The way they record the sounds is very original because the person that makes the sounds has to use materials or even their own body to create sounds that will adapt to the movement or action that's happening in the clip. Example, when a character is walking on an echoey place, a foley artist might record these walking sounds before editing in order to make it look much more realistic and original. This also works very good with scenes such as items breaking or fights. I have attached a video I looked at on Youtube that shows an example of how foley sounds are made and the way in which they adapt to the real film. We might probably use foley sound techniques for our thriller opening in order to make it interesting.
